Are we aware of the depletion of our top soil? Or About our duty towards our motherland? And are we concerned about our next generation’s survival?

Regional activity at Kumartuli; on the occasion of Earth Day.

Sadhguru addresses “We as a responsible human being, have fundamental duties over our Earth. To keep the soil alive and this legacy should be passed on to future generations.”

We have already lost 52% of agrarian soil. Soil degradation means a massive drop in the organic content of the soil. Which may lead to desertification and food shortage. Hence, it’s time to get the youths in forefront to spread the awareness #Save Soil.

Though soil depletion is an ecological issue, nothing would be done until it’s made an election issue. Only then the governing body would show their concern. And with the help of 3.5 billion people, the government may adopt policies and set a budget for the renewal of ecology and soil.

On 22nd April 2022, Isha foundation celebrated Earth Day. They conducted regional activities at three different places in Kolkata. At Kumartuli the volunteer tried to give shape to the idol of Aadi Yogi. “Aadi Yogi is a symbol of ultimate consciousness. And Aadi Yogi is really important for this Global movement, to save soil. Because through him we want people to start living consciously. They become aware of their surroundings and take action for the cause,” said Dipayan.

Degradation of soil is a barrier in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also achieving zero hunger, eradicating poverty, ensuring health, biodiversity loss etc. Juhita, Volunteer of Isha foundation says, “The quality and quantity of food crops are deteriorating day by day. 100 years ago soil was more fertile and could cultivate more crops. Due to this, farmers at that time were in much better condition than now. The nutrition level has decreased, now we have eight oranges to get the same quantity of nutrients that our ancestors had in one orange. The Earth’s condition has become so poor.”

oil is a solution to many problems. But our soil is deteriorating at an alarming rate. Soil holds and protects clean water and also helps in climate issues. Soil depletion would affect the economic growth, as food production will decrease. The policymakers would sit to overcome poverty, water pollution, climate crisis and others but they would overlook this vital natural resource, soil.

The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”
