Today, this horror graveyard is preserved as an Archaeological Survey of India site. Around the 18th century this burial ground was established And was used by Britishers and their families. South Park Street Cemetery is one of the earliest ‘non-church’ burial grounds in the world. Originally it open In 1767. But In 1790, it stopped receiving any dead bodies. It has 1600 Graves and tombs. The most unique thing about this cemetery is that they have interesting and gothic tombstones and lots of Moses all over the cemetery just add to it’s beauty.
According to guides and engraves it’s known that many young youth have been buried there. Some Graves are shaped like small and big tombs, some like tall towers and some like a temple. Most of the gravestone will have the name of the person buried, the year and their age.

Some even have a background story about them and notes from friends. There are some famous memorials of well known individuals such as Henry Derozio who died at 22, Rose Alymer whose grave was shaped like a pineapple,as it’s believe she used to love pineapple, Sir William Jones who founded Asiatic Society that can still be found on Park Street today and Charles ‘Hindoo’ Stuart whose tomb is like a shaped of a temple. Though many say it’s one of the haunted places in Kolkata, no paranormal activity has been addressed till now. But after 5 O’Clock in the evening no one is allowed to go inside. But It’s one of the calmest places to visit by tourists and by locals to get lost in the beauty of the place.
